Capecitabine is a prodrug, meaning it is converted into its active form inside the body. Once ingested, capecitabine is metabolized into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a potent chemotherapy drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. 5-FU interferes with DNA synthesis in cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and growing.
