It is also used as an animal feed additive to improve growth and performance. Grain-based diets, particularly those containing barley, can significantly increase the viscosity of digested feed in monogastric animals (such as poultry), negatively affecting nutrient absorption. As beta-glucan is a key component of fungal cell walls, this enzyme also has strong antifungal properties. Beta-1,3-glucanase, when combined with chitinase, exhibits potent antifungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi like Botrytis cinerea, which affects greenhouse crops. Since this enzyme is non-toxic to animal cells, it can also be used as an antifungal treatment for infections such as Candida albicans.
