Center Housing

A Center Housing, often referred to as the Center Housing and Rotating Assembly (CHRA) or "core," is the central component of a turbocharger located between the compressor and turbine housings. It houses the bearing system, oil seals, and the shaft that connects the compressor and turbine wheels, enabling high-speed rotation. Key Details About Center Housing (CHRA): Function: It supports the shaft that allows the turbine to drive the compressor, and it provides crucial lubrication and cooling pathways for the bearings. Components: Contains the bearings (journal and thrust), turbine shaft, seal plates, and piston ring seals. Material: Usually cast from gray cast iron for durability and thermal resistance. Role in Repair: When a turbocharger fails, the CHRA is often replaced as a single, balanced unit rather than repairing individual parts. Significance: It is considered the heart of the turbocharger, allowing it to function at speeds up to 200,000 RPM.
