Horticultural-grade expanded perlite is a lightweight, porous mineral material widely used in soil conditioning, potting mixes, soilless growing media, greenhouse cultivation, and professional horticultural applications. Produced by rapidly heating and expanding selected perlite ore, it develops a distinctive cellular structure containing numerous pores that help improve the physical properties of growing media.
Its porous structure provides beneficial air spaces around plant roots while allowing excess water to drain efficiently. At the same time, the particles can retain a portion of moisture within their pores and on their surfaces, helping create a balanced growing environment with both adequate aeration and moisture availability.
Expanded perlite is chemically stable and relatively inert, meaning it generally does not react significantly with fertilizers, nutrients, or other components of a growing medium. Its typically near-neutral pH makes it suitable for a broad range of plants and cultivation systems. As an inorganic material, properly processed horticultural perlite is free from organic matter and does not serve as a food source for microorganisms.
Very low bulk density for easy handling and transportation
High porosity for improved root-zone aeration
Excellent drainage to reduce excessive water accumulation
Moisture-retention capability within its porous structure
Chemically stable and relatively inert
Typically near-neutral pH
Inorganic and free from organic matter
Sterile when properly processed
Durable physical structure under appropriate growing conditions
Helps improve the air-to-water balance of growing media
Horticultural expanded perlite can be incorporated into potting soils, seed-starting mixes, greenhouse substrates, container growing media, hydroponic systems, propagation media, and soil-conditioning formulations. It can be used alone in certain soilless cultivation systems or blended with materials such as peat, coco coir, compost, or other growing-media components.
By improving drainage and aeration while retaining a useful amount of moisture, expanded perlite helps create a favorable root environment and supports healthier root development across a wide range of horticultural and agricultural applications.
