Heparin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) and is used for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, thromboembolism in patients with atrial fibrillation, peripheral arterial embolism, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and prevention of blood clots in cardiac and arterial surgeries and during dialysis. The correct dosage of the drug: The dosage of the drug is determined by the doctor, but the usual dosage of this drug is as follows: - Use in adults: - Use in the treatment of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism: Initial dose, 60 to 80 units per kilogram of weight (or 5000 units) as an intravenous bolus and then 12 to 18 units per kilogram of weight per hour (or 1000 units per hour) intravenously Or initial dose, 333 units per kilogram of weight subcutaneously and then 250 units per kilogram of weight every 12 hours subcutaneously - Use in the prevention of venous thromboembolism and pulmonary embolism: 5000 units every 8 to 12 hours subcutaneously - Use in children: Due to the presence of benzyl alcohol in this product, its use is not recommended in infants and children under 3 years of age. – Use in the elderly: This drug should be used with caution in the elderly (over 60 years of age, especially women). The elderly are more likely to experience bleeding after taking heparin. Lower doses of heparin are usually needed in these individuals.
