In Iranian medicine, there is a history of using lavender to treat various diseases. To evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of lavender, hydroalcoholic extract, polyphenolic composition, and lavender essential oil were prepared, and formalin and acetic acid-induced pain tests were used to investigate their analgesic effects in mice, and carrageenan tests were used to investigate their anti-inflammatory effects in rats. The results of this study confirm the traditional use of lavender for the treatment of painful and inflammatory diseases and suggest further studies to determine the active chemical components.
Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic joint disease that affects middle-aged and elderly people. In a randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial of 90 patients with knee osteoarthritis, patients in 3 aromatherapy massage groups with lavender essential oil, placebo (almond oil massage), and control (no massage) were assessed for pain using a VAS at baseline, immediately after the intervention, 1 week, and 4 weeks after the intervention.
