Traction is a non-invasive treatment method in physical therapy that reduces pain by stretching the spinal vertebrae apart, reducing pressure on the discs and nerve branches, and thereby increasing blood circulation, reducing pain, and stabilizing or correcting the position of the vertebrae in the spine.
About the modality
Given that the required force must be applied in sufficient quantity (specific and controlled), in the appropriate direction, and for the appropriate duration, in physiotherapy, a traction device is used to apply this force to move joints and stretch soft tissues. Traction is usually used to stretch the cervical or lumbar regions. In this method, the patient is placed on a bed that has special facilities for stretching the spine and, depending on the type of traction (cervical or lumbar) required, the relevant slings are tied to the patient. Then, the traction rope is connected to the slings and the desired traction force is applied by pulling the ropes with a specific force by the device.
