The method of separating the different components of air is based on the principle of distillation. Distillation uses a combination of evaporation and condensation: components with a lower boiling point evaporate into a liquid, while components with a higher boiling point condense into a gas. By repeating this operation, further separation is achieved. According to the principles of separation in distillation towers, the components of the air are converted into pure nitrogen at the top of the tower and into liquid air rich in oxygen at the bottom of the tower.
