About the modality
Ultrasound therapy is a non-invasive, effective, and FDA-approved treatment for musculoskeletal problems. The probe of the ultrasound device contains a piezoelectric crystal that is oscillated by an electric current, which creates ultrasonic waves, or ultrasound. These sound waves penetrate deep into tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints, creating deep heat and non-thermal effects in the tissue. In the thermal effect, when ultrasound waves are transmitted from the device to the skin, they cause the nearby tissues to vibrate, and this vibration generates heat within the tissues. The deep heat created in the tissue increases blood circulation, which in turn increases elasticity, accelerates tissue repair, and reduces pain. In addition to the thermal effects, ultrasound waves produce energy in the body, which causes the expansion and contraction of small gas bubbles around the soft tissue.
