Capecitabine is a prodrug, meaning it is converted into its active form inside the body. Once ingested, capecitabine is metabolized into 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), a potent chemotherapy drug that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. 5-FU interferes with DNA synthesis in cancer cells, preventing them from dividing and growing. Capecitabine is specifically used because it targets tumor cells more effectively while causing less harm to normal, healthy cells compared to traditional 5-FU injections.
